Q. Why do many of modern detergents contain enzymes?

A. Most detergents used in the past only separated dirt from clothes and did not dissolve the dirt itself. However, enzymes function to dissolve the dirt. Therefore, using detergents with enzymes cleans clothes better. Yet, no one enzyme dissolves all types of soiled clothes. For example, there are protein-dissolving enzymes and fat-dissolving enzymes.

Of course, stronger chemicals can also dissolve dirt. However, some of them are too dangerous to be used at home and could also damage clothing fabric. On the other hand, enzymes can be used just by mixing them with detergents. They are quite convenient and dissolve dirt safely.
